Turnitin – requests from other Universities to view papers

If you use Turnitin you may occasionally receive requests from staff at other Universities to view a student’s paper to check for plagiarism. The request will come via email and will include the details of the person making the request; the reason why; and the text of the paper in question.

To allow the person to see the paper, reply to the email. The person will only receive the text of the email – they will not be allowed to see any other details about the student. However, if the student included their name or id in the text of their paper, remove these from the email before sending.

Always ensure you follow the University’s guidelines:

“If you are contacted by someone from another institution in response to the system [Turnitin] having spotted similarities between work submitted at the two institutions, you must not give any personal information whatsoever about the student at the University of Leeds.  Official policy is not even to confirm or deny that a named person is registered as a student at the University.”

Comments are welcome, however if you need help or advice please contact the ISS helpdesk on tel (0113) 343 3333, or helpdesk@leeds.ac.uk.
