Staff Information – images

The upgraded VLE requires staff information images to be 150 x 150 pixels. If the image is not this size it may appear stretched.

This means images uploaded before the upgrade may need to be removed and readded.

Comments are welcome, however if you need help or advice please contact the ISS helpdesk on tel (0113) 343 3333, or helpdesk@leeds.ac.uk.

Questionmark – links added to the VLE before upgrade

Unfortunately some links to Questionmark added before the VLE upgrade no longer work. A process was run to fix them but this has only partially worked.

We are working to fix this problem as soon as possible. Apologies for any inconvenience.

New in BB9: Adding files (10/10)

Before the upgrade you had to modify an item if you wanted to add multiple files, now you don’t need to. You can either choose to attach another file whilst still on the add item page, or use drag and drop to upload files to the Content Collection and then add them to your module (you don’t have to leave the module to do this anymore).

Attach another file: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/vle/demos/additem/additem.html

Drag and drop: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/vle/demos/add_files/add_files2.html

Content Collection changes

There are two major changes.

1. Now when you add any content to your modules & organisations, copies of the files will be added to the new modules (known as courses) & organisations area of the Content Collection automatically. You will also see links to these areas in the Content Collection tab. The historical module areas under UoL content can still be accessed though.

2. The VLE Service has deprecated the ‘My Content’ area and will phase out support for this feature beginning immediately. Read only access to your existing files will be maintained, and you can still see content which was added before the VLE upgrade but won’t be able to add content there anymore. Some staff used this area to store current module content, this is unsupportable and poses particular problems for faculty staff collaborating on or inheriting modules, and unnecessarily complicates the rollover process. You can leave content there but if you want to move it to another area in the Content Collection, please contact the ISS Helpdesk. For a small number of files, a convenient workaround is to download the required content and upload it to the appropriate area in the module.

Which browser?

The recommended browsers for the VLE are:

  • Internet Explorer 8*/Firefox 3.6 (Windows)
  • Safari 5/Firefox 3.6 (OSX)

*Internet Exporer 8 should not be run in Compatability Mode.

When using Internet Explorer 7 performance is generally slow, particularly when pages load for the first time. Users will also notice some page layout issues, notably when selecting dates with the calendar (the colum headings are in the wrong place). Staff will find drag and drop functionality intermittently fails.

The staff desktop will be updated to IE8 later in the Summer. In the meantime you may wish to use the Firefox browser.

Our FAQs include more information about the recommended specifications.

Questionmark and the VLE – Important Update

1. The staging server is not currently available. We are working to make this available as soon as possible.

2. Following the VLE upgrade you may find that you can no longer connect to Questionmark via the Authoring Manager. If this affects you it means you need to update your software. Download the correct version here and follow the instructions to install: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/perception/v4_install.html (if you do not have administration rights on your computer you will need to ask a Faculty IT contact/ISS Helpdesk to do this for you). .

3. The method of scheduling an assessment has changed. Previously when scheduling an assessment in the VLE you would navigate through an identical folder structure to that of the live Questionmark server. Questionmark have introduced a change which means you will no longer see a folder structure, instead every assessment on the live server (this includes yours and other users) is listed in name order from the dropdown list in the VLE.

This could be particularly problematic if you or somebody else at the University has one or more assessments with the same name. If you are unable to easily locate the assessment you want, a workaround is to rename the assessment in authoring manager adding your ISS username at the beginning e.g. libxxxMyAssessment.

The VLE Service are working on a custom fix for Leeds to restore the folder view in the VLE, meaning you will again see the folder structure and only have access to schedule the assessments you have authoring rights to. We hope to have this available before the start of the new academic year.

If you use Questionmark through the VLE, read our guide.

VLE unavailable

A final reminder that the VLE will be unavailable from 23:59 tonight. The upgraded VLE will be back by Friday 1 July.

As we’ll be extremely busy during the upgrade, we probably won’t be posting to this blog.

See you in two weeks (hopefully less).
