Turnitin submissions using Safari

We recently recommended that students do not submit to Turnitin using the Safari browser.

Turnitin have now issued the following guidance when submitting with Safari:

In a small number of cases, corrupt caching settings within the Safari browser has caused the session to hang and submissions to fail. If this occurs then users should take the following steps:

  1. Go to the Safari Preferences > Privacy tab > Manage Website Data.
  2. Look for and remove the three cached websites below: (All three may not be present)
    – googlesyndication.com
    – googleservices.com
    – turnitinuk.com or turnitin.com
  3. Close and reopen Safari.
  4. Try submitting again.

We cannot confirm how widespread this issue is so please give yourself extra time to submit if you are submitting using the Safari browser. Follow the steps above if your submission fails. Alternatively, you can submit using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Turnitin Submissions using Safari

During recent weeks, several students have reported issues when submitting assignments in the Safari browser. This has been reported to Turnitin however we are yet receive confirmation of the cause.

While we are investigating this issue, we recommend that students do not use Safari to make submissions in Minerva and instead use the current version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

Turnitin Browser Compatibility

A brief reminder that Turnitin no longer support the use of Internet Explorer 11. We first informed the community of this in May, however this has come to a head today with the first reports of the tool failing in older versions of the unsupported browser.

If you are an IE11 user for Turnitin, please switch to a supported browser for Turnitin work.

Turnitin now support the latest and one previous version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge.

  • Firefox (Quantum)
  • Chrome
  • Safari
  • Microsoft Edge (Edge 17 and 16 are supported, but version 15 is known to work).

For users of the current campus Windows desktops, macOS or Linux machines,  we recommend you use the latest Google Chrome, or the latest Firefox Quantum browsers for Turnitin specific work.

These browsers are also suitable for all other Minerva activity.

Minerva Supported Browsers

Since the last upgrade, the browsers that are supported have changed and you may require a newer version to access resources. In most cases, you will be unaffected by this change and all browsers on standard staff IT desktops are compatible.

Here is a list of supported browser versions:

  • Chrome 36+
  • Edge 20+
  • Firefox 31+
  • Internet Explorer 11+ (Windows Only)
  • Safari 9+ (Mac Only)

However, the version of Internet Explorer accessed via Desktop Anywhere is currently unsupported (version 10). There are two options if you access Minerva via Desktop Anywhere:

  1. Do you actually need to use Desktop Anywhere? If you are just accessing Minerva, this can be done on your home PC/Laptop browser without the need to log into Desktop Anywhere. Go directly to https://minerva.leeds.ac.uk/
  2. If you do need to use Desktop Anywhere then Google Chrome is installed and supported. Please use this browser.

There will be an update to Desktop Anywhere before the new academic year that will update Internet Explorer to version 11 and fix this issue – but in the meantime, please follow the guidance above.

Images don’t display in emailed Announcements

Internet Explorer users need to be aware of a new issue with announcements that include embedded images. Images will not display if an announcement is emailed. The issue only occurs if the announcement was created using Internet Explorer, and only affects users who read the announcement outside of the VLE.

A workaround is to use Chrome or Firefox when creating the announcement.

Turnitin and Internet Explorer

Turnitin have removed support for Internet Explorer 10 (IE10) and earlier versions without prior notice. To ensure you don’t experience issues when accessing Turnitin we recommend that you use the Chrome or Firefox browser.
