How can PhD students get staff access to modules?

PhD students often need staff access to modules to teach or grade and must get a staff IT username to use specialised tools such as Turnitin.

The student will get a staff IT username which needs to be associated to their staff ID number, meaning they can be enrolled via Banner.

Faculty IT will have to approve the IT user account and Central HR will have to provide the user with a Staff ID. Once this is finalised, enrolments will come from Banner overnight.

We recommend the Teaching Assistant module role for PhD Students. This allows them to edit the module/access the Grade Centre. Other roles are described in our roles guide.

Remember that if the student just needs to see a module but not edit or grade, staff on the module can enrol them as a student.

VLE staff data feed temporarily suspended

Staff may be aware that many staff 12/13 module enrolments were temporarily made unavailable this morning. The issue occurred as a result of amendments made in Banner to staff module data yesterday (05/02/2013).  To rectify this in the VLE we have reverted to staff module enrolment data that was valid on the 04/02/2013.

Investigations are underway as to a resolution. In the meantime we have suspended the staff module data feed only, meaning no changes to staff module data in Banner will be updated in the VLE until further notice.

Student enrolments are not affected by this.

VLE Service

VLE data feed resumed – 22/08/12

Following the Banner issue last week, the VLE data feed returned to normal operation today (22/08/2012). Staff and student data entered into Banner during the last week has been added VLE.

VLE performance issues – data feed suspended

To direct as much resource as possible to the remedial processes we are running on the VLE overnight all data feeds have been stopped into the VLE. This means there will be no new enrolments added tonight (04/10/2011) via our usual data feed processes. As soon as the current VLE performance issues are alleviated we will run a full data update.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Rollover progress: Student data load

A brief update for administrators and instructors:

Student data will shortly be loaded for 2010 /11 modules. Testing last week pointed to some refinements we will implement today and a new test load will be made on our development VLE in the next 36 hours. The team aims to have student data coming into the live VLE mid week.

Banner Maintenance

The central enrolments database ‘Banner’ is being upgraded by ISS and has been made temporarily unavailable. Consequently, there will be no updates to staff or student enrolments on the VLE until at least Tuesday next week (Tuesday 4th May).

Schools and Faculties with staff who need to be added to a module as graders, instructors, module builders etc in the next few days should contact the ISS helpdesk on Tel 33333.

New student enrolments or alterations will resume next week once the Banner upgrade is completed.

Please note, staff and students who already have enrolments will not be affected by this event and need do nothing – you can still use the VLE.
