Double spacing – VLE emails

There is a known issue where emails sent using the VLE’s Email Tool will have double spacing, even though they display with single line spacing in the Content Editor.

A workaround is to hold down the Shift and Enter keys instead of Enter when composing an email.

For Staff: Turnitin iPad app – QuickMarks with rubric criteria not updating

Turnitin has identified the following known issue with it’s iPad grading app:

iPad® app – QuickMarks associated to a rubric criteria not updating – Instructor

There is a known issue with the Turnitin for iPad® app where QuickMarks associated with a Rubric Criteria may fail to save or synch to the iPad. To avoid this issue, instructors should not associate a QuickMark with a Rubric Criteria when using the iPad to grade. The Turnitin engineering team has developed a fix for this issue which will be released in the next version of the app coming in of October 2014.

We will post an update once the issues have been resolved. A full list of known issues, news, notifications and maintenance periods can be found on the Turniitin website.

For Staff: Turnitin iPad app – Known Issues

Turnitin has identified the following known issues with it’s iPad grading app:

iPad® app – Syncing issue for large assignments (over 300 submissions) – Instructor
Turnitin has confirmed the existence of an issue with the sync feature in the Turnitin for iPad® app where the sync process fails and cannot complete for Turnitin assignments that have a large number of submissions (approximately 300 or more).

The Turnitin engineering team is working on an update to the app that should resolve this issue and will release the new version as soon as possible.

In the interim, Turnitin recommend that marking for any assignments with such a large number of submissions is not attempted via the iPad, but only done via a PC or Mac.

Turnitin for iPad® iOS 8 Compatibility Issues – Instructor
Apple’s iOS 8 for the iPad® was released on September 17, 2014. The Turnitin engineering team is planning to release an new version of the Turnitin for iPad® app as soon as possible (tentatively scheduled for release in October 2014) to address the following known issue with iOS 8.

“Submit Nothing” assignments — the app may crash after an instructor clicks on the grey pencil icon to give feedback without having the student submit any work. As a work-around, please avoid using the “Submit Nothing” feature in iOS 8 until a new version of the app is released.

We will post an update once the issues have been resolved. A full list of known issues, news, notifications and maintenance periods can be found on the Turniitin website.

Turnitin: Comma in item title can cause issues

This issue only affects staff.

When using the Google Chrome browser, bulk downloads of submissions from Turnitin will likely fail if the assignment title contains a comma.

Do not use commas in the assignment title of a Turnitin item.

Turnitin are aware of the issue. In the meantime, if you are affected by this issue, use Internet Explorer or Firefox for bulk downloads.

Issues with the Reading List tool

Update: These issues were resolved 18 September.

Please be aware that there are some problems with the VLE Reading List tool at the moment. Colleagues are working on a fix for these issues.

Full-screen mode

The full-screen mode option has an issue in all browsers:

  • After opening the editor in full-screen mode, the button to restore normal size and proceed is obscured, and so you cannot proceed and save your change. Unfortunately, there is no workaround for this at present – please don’t open the editor in full-screen mode.

The full-screen mode option looks like this:

Internet Explorer

There are a number of issues in Internet Explorer. The easiest workaround is to use the Firefox or Chrome browsers.

  •  When copying and pasting into the editor, if you use Control-V, text is pasted in twice.
Workaround:  Instead of using Control-V to paste, right-click in the reading list content editor window and select Paste.
  • It is not possible to select blocks of text in the editor (e.g. for deletion or copying) by dragging with the mouse – the selection freezes after a short period.
Workaround: Select text by holding the Shift key down and using the cursor up, down, left and right arrows.
  • Some buttons in the editor toolbar do not work correctly, e.g. “Clean all formatting” does not work. Unfortunately, there is no workaround for this at present.
